Three second-half goals in a nine-minute span lifted Colorado School of Mines over New Mexico Highlands, 3-0, in a non-RMAC game on Sunday.
Brooke Stoermer started the rally in the 57th minute before Peyton Sanders and Mel Westhoff scored in the 63rd and 66th minutes, respectively.
Sam Zumbro had a superb seven-save shutout in goal as Mines (9-4-2, 6-1-2 RMAC) withstood 15 shots from the Cowgirls (6-7-1, 5-2-1 RMAC).
Jacklyn Knott created the play for Stoermer's goal, and Emily Garnier's corner kick set up Sanders' first career goal. Westhoff's goal was unassisted, her second of the season.
NOTABLES
- Mines led 19-15 on shots, bouncing back from a 9-5 first-half deficit to outshoot the hosts 15-6 in the second. CSM was also ahead 5-2 on corners.
- Zumbro improved to 5-2-1 this season. NMHU combined Ashlyn Bruin and Apolonia Thomas for four saves, with Bruin taking the loss allowing all three goals.
- Stoermer's goal, her fourth of the season, ties her with Acacia Ortiz for the team lead.
- Knott's assist was the first of her career. The junior has eight career goals, including one earlier this season.
- The shutout was Mines' ninth of the season.
- The win sweeps the season series from New Mexico Highlands. Mines won 1-0 back on Oct. 4 at Stermole Stadium in the game that counted towards the RMAC standings. Only one meeting between league members per season goes towards the table.
