How It Happened

Behind two first-half goals from freshman John Haist, #18 Colorado School of Mines (7-0-1, 5-0) men's soccer remains undefeated in the RMAC with a 2-1 victory against Regis (Colo.) University (3-4, 2-3) on Friday, October 2 at Stermole Soccer Stadium. The win gives Mines a season sweep of Regis after they beat the Rangers in a non-conference match earlier this season in Denver.

Mines didn't waist anytime proving to Regis who was going to be the best team on the day. The Orediggers outshot the Rangers 15-2 in the first half and freshman John Haist found the back of net twice which decided the game.

After coming on as a sub midway through the period, Haist knocked in his first goal during the 38th-minute when he nodded home with authority sophomore Nikolaus Grotz' corner kick from the left side. His second goal came just over five minutes later (43:09) when, off a turnover at midfield, senior Richard Garvey sent in a centering cross from the right side of the box that Haist easily knocked past the Regis keeper's right.

Regis got one of those goals back early into the second half when Eduardo Belmar deposited a cross from Brian Strasbaugh in goal at the 53:34-mark.

That wasn't going to be enough though as Mines' backline snuffed out every possession the rest of the way. In fact, the Orediggers defense was so dominant that they allowed only two shots on goal the entire contest.
