Box Score How It Happened
Behind a total team effort, #18 Colorado School of Mines (10-3, 4-1) earned a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 29-27) shutout at Fort Lewis College (3-10, 0-5) on Friday, October 4 at Whalen Gymnasium.
The Orediggers hit an impressive .409 (22 kills) to easily take the opening set, 25-19, against the home standing Skyhawks. Leading that impressive hitting display in the first set was senior Megan Peterson who drilled seven kills while hitting .500 to boot. Senior setter Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood also assisted on a staggering 19 of CSM's 22 kills in the frame.
Set #2 was slightly tighter and sloppier as neither team hit very well in the frame. Mines really put the set away during the midway portion when they took a 10-10 deadlock and stretched it into a 19-14 advantage. Five different Orediggers contributed a point during the key run, but it was senior Frannie Cormier who got the run going with back-to-back kills.
Not wanting to disappoint its homecoming crowd, Fort Lewis came out determined to stave off elimination in the third frame. The entire third set saw Mines get out to a slim lead only to see FLC come roaring back to knot the game back up several times.
The Skyhawks appeared as though it would take the third set when they took a 27-26 lead, but a kill by Cormier tied the game back up and back-to-back Orediggers blocks allowed Mines to take the set and match, 29-27.
