How It Happened

With revenge on its mind, the 19th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (17-4, 11-2) volleyball team got a nice sweep (25-19, 25-18, 25-19) over a scrappy Western State (10-14, 7-6) squad on Saturday, October 24 in Lockridge Arena.

On September 25, Mines dropped its first meeting of the season at Western State, 3-1, which was its first conference loss of the season. With that setback in mind, the Orediggers took care of the Mountaineers with a workman-like victory.

While the Orediggers were outhit (.333-to-.192) in the opening set they still got a comfortable 25-19 victory. The Mountaineers committed six service errors and Mines got four kills from junior Alanna Winfield to sneak out with the win.

The second set saw a more determined CSM team come out as they hit collectively .367 in the frame and scrambled well on defense to get out with a 25-18 win. Trailing 14-10 at one point, Mines went on a 15-4 run to close the set.

The great hitting continued in the third and final frame as Mines collectively hit .333 and drilled 19 kills to take the set, 25-19. The Orediggers got a balanced attack in the frame as Winfield, sophomore Ellie Monarch and freshman Janice Jin each notched five kills.
