Box Score How It Happened
The 18th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (17-5, 11-2) couldn't slow down hot hitting MSU Denver (14-9, 10-3) on their home court as they fell by the final of 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, October 28.
The Orediggers took control early in set one as they forced MSU Denver into the early timeout with a 16-12 advantage. The Roadrunners came back with three quick points to force a CSM timeout. While Mines would hold the lead for much of the back half of the set, Metro State dug out of a late 23-21 deficit to win by the final of 25-23.
Set No. 2 was the definition of a nip-and-tuck affair as literally both teams traded the lead and never got a definitive edge over the other. Trailing 23-21, Mines fought back to tie the match on kills from freshman Janice Jin and senior Megan Peterson. After a Metro timeout, the Roadrunners closed out the set on a service error and a kill from Vasati Fiatoa to win again by the final of 25-23.
The third and final set for the Orediggers was one they would soon just forget as they could do no right for most of it, and MSU Denver could do no wrong as they raced to 20 in the blink of an eye. Mines would trail by as much as much as 10 (20-10) before making a late rally to match out of it, but still ultimately dropped the set, 25-21.
