How It Happened

Missed chances is what #17 Colorado School of Mines (11-4, 5-2) volleyball will remember as it dropped a nip-and-tuck affair with MSU Denver (9-8, 6-2) by the final of 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 28-26) on Friday, October 9 in Lockridge Arena.

Usually in a match in which a team lost by shutout the match didn't seem that close, but in this case the Orediggers were in thick of it in each frame.

In the opening set, Mines dug out of an 18-12 deficit and got back to within one at 24-23, but the Roadrunners lead was just enough to escape with the game. Each team hit at least .250 in the set with both teams only committing five attacking errors.

Mines found themselves with a 17-14 lead midway through the second frame, but scored only five more points the rest of the way as Metro went on 11-5 run to take a 2-0 lead. The reason the Roadrunners came back in that set was that they hit at a .364 clip.

The third and final frame was neck-and-neck the entire way as neither team was able to gain much separation. Twice Mines appeared as though it was going to take the set at 25-24 and again at 26-25, but MSU closed out the match with back-to-back kills to take the frame, 28-26.

Notables

-          Both teams hit well throughout the match with Metro edging by, .282-to-.248.

-          Mines actually had more collective kills (46-to-44), but had more attacking errors (17-to-13).

-          Metro outside hitter Michaela Smith led both teams with 15 kills on the night.

-          Senior Frannie Cormier was the only Mines player to reach double-digit kills with 13. She also had 10 digs for a double-double.

-          Junior Alanna Winfield was quiet most of the contest until the super tight third period where she put up seven of her nine kills.

-          Senior setter Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood posted her ninth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 10 digs.
