GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines wrestling has signed three-time state champion TJ Shelton during the national early signing period.
Shelton, a multi-sport standout at Meeker High, owns three Colorado class 2A titles, winning 160 pounds as a freshman and 170 pounds each of the last two years. He projects as a 174-pounder in college.
"TJ is a huge signee for our wrestling program," said head coach Austin DeVoe. "TJ's high school accomplishments speak volumes to his athletic ability, but most importantly we were impressed by his character throughout the recruiting process. His commitment is one piece of the puzzle as we continue to build on this great start to the 2016-17 incoming class."
A star multi-sport student-athlete at Meeker, Shelton has been all-state in wrestling, track & field, and football. He is a former 100m dash state champion and two-time 200m state silver medalist, and has been picked as first-team all-Colorado at both running back and linebacker in football. He led Meeker wrestling to a state runner-up team finish last season after a third-place showing in 2014; Meeker football was a state semifinalist in 1A with him on the team, as well.
Shelton is a National Honor Society officer, and will also graduate high school with an associate's degree from Colorado Northwestern Community College. At Mines, he plans on majoring in civil engineering.
