Box Score HOW IT HAPPENED
A big second half by UC San Diego lifted the Tritons to an 86-75 win over #10 Colorado School of Mines on Sunday.
The Orediggers (2-1) were led by Caleb Waitsman's 16 points off the bench, but UCSD (2-0) shot 66.7 percent in the second half to overcome a Mines lead, including six of their nine total three-pointers.
A tight first half saw Mines lead 35-34 at the break. UCSD quickly took the lead in the second half on a Grant Jackson three-pointer and never gave it up, with a 13-4 run turning a tie game into a decisive 50-41 lead in the opening minutes of the half.
Mines clawed back and got as close as eight points when Ben Claire sank a pair of free throws with 2:26 left, but Drew Dyer's three-pointer closed the door on any potential comeback as UCSD made its free throws in the final minute.
NOTABLES
- Gokul Natesan scored 15 with four assists to lead the starters. Joe Dellenbach scored 13, all in the first half.
- UCSD's Dyer led all players with 19 points, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
- Mines shot 47.5 percent from the floor but struggled from range, sinking two of 10 three-point tries.
