How It Happened

A dominant rebounding effort and a monster double-double from senior Courtney Martin propelled Colorado School of Mines (1-2) to its first win of the season over Johnson & Wales University in a 92-66 rout on Friday, November 27.

Martin's career night of 23 points and a career-high 15 rebounds powered Mines dominant effort on the glass. The Orediggers outrebounded JWU, 62-31, to limit the chances of the high-scoring Wildcats outfit.

The Orediggers and Wildcats went basket-for-basket to start the opening period of the game. With a 11-10 lead, CSM went on a 10-3 run to close out the quarter. That was the key run of the game as senior Courtney Martin scored six of the team's 10 points during that stretch to give Mines a relatively comfortable 21-13 lead.

JWU got back to within six points just 30 seconds into the second period – the closest they would get the rest of the game – before Martin got a layup followed by a jumper to push the lead back to double digits. Mines then led by as much as 16 at two different points in the second quarter to take a 42-26 advantage into intermission.

After the break, Mines pushed its lead up to 20 at 7:03 mark in the third period on redshirt-sophomore Caitlyn Smith's layup. From there, the Orediggers held a 17-to-20 point lead for essentially the next five minutes until JWU's Amanda Weber nailed a three with 1:30 to get within 14. CSM quickly got back up by 19 again when junior Laura Tyree drilled a trey with 27 seconds remaining to give Mines a 68-49 lead after three.

Mines finished out the game with ease as they added a net positive seven points to its total to defeat the Wildcats, 92-66. The Orediggers finished the rout in style as redshirt-freshman Elizabeth Tomon hit three to push the lead to 26 – Mines highest of the night.
