Behind nine block assists from both sophomore Ellie Monarch and junior Alanna Winfield, the #22 Colorado School of Mines (20-5, 14-2) got a convincing 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-18) victory at RMAC newcomer Westminster (7-17, 4-12) on Friday, November 6.
The Orediggers did not hit particularly well in the first set (.171), but both Monarch and Winfield each drilled four kills and combined on five blocks to help CSM squeeze out a 26-24 win. Mines pulled away at the end when they broke a 24-24 deadlock on a kill by Winfield and a service ace from senior Frannie Cormier.
Mines completely dominated the second set, 25-12, by taking a narrow 8-7 lead and stretching it to a decisive 17-7 advantage in the blink of an eye. While the Orediggers didn't need the help, Westminster contributed greatly to the blow out with a combined 14 errors in the frame.
CSM then closed out the match in the third by hitting a combined .325 to cruise to a 25-18 victory. While Monarch and Winfield each threw down four kills in the frame, it was freshman Janice Jin who led the way with six kills. Senior Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood also dished out an impressive 17 assists in the game.
Notables
- As mentioned above, Ellie Monarch and Alanna Winfield combined nine of Mines' 10 blocks on the night. The nine blocks are a career-high for Monarch and is the second-highest total for Winfield this season.
- Monarch also led the game with 11 kills edging out Winfield and Janice Jin who each had 10. Jin also led the team with a .471 attacking percentage.
- Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood collected her 14th double-double of the season with 41 assists and 10 digs.
- Mines won the team battle in kills (45-25), blocks (10-4), attacking percentage (.252-.061), assists (44-24) and digs (50-39).
