Box Score How It Happened
Twice as nice! #8 Colorado School of Mines (16-0-3) hoisted its second straight RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament trophy by pulling out a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Colorado Mesa in the final at Stermole Stadium.
All-Tournament selection Joe Haines scored the game winner from freshman John Haist in the 78' to give Mines the difference in a physical tournament final.
The Orediggers will find out its NCAA draw in a live selection show Monday at 4 p.m. MST on NCAA.com. Joe Haines, Ryan Leach, Richard Garvey, Andres Ramirez, David Boldt were named to the All-Tournament team while Nikolaus Grotz earned Tournament MVP.
Mines found itself behind the proverbial "eight-ball" early in the contest as Colorado Mesa's Roy Abergil put in his fourth goal of the tournament off a throw in from Trentin Atkin in the 7'. That ended up being in the only goal of the first half as both team's defenses were on top of their respective games.
The Mavericks lead wouldn't last long though as junior David Boldt scored the first goal of his Mines career in the 48' when he snuck a goal in the bottom right corner off a Grotz corner kick from the left side.
After the equalizing goal was scored, Mines seemed to find new confidence on offense as they made CMU keeper Briley Guarneri work extra hard to keep the game tied over the next 20 minutes.
The game winner finally came at 77:04 when John Haist found a streaking Joe Haines on the break. Haines beat two Mavericks defenders and buried the game winner in the bottom left corner.
From there, Mines starting goalkeeper Collin Hall and his backline survived a few scares including a scorcher from CMU's Kevin Escobar in the 82' to preserve CSM's clean sweep of the RMAC Regular Season and Tournament trophies.
