GOLDEN, Colo. - Three consecutive falls by Ben Krantz, Karl Breidenbach, and Paul Wilson sparked Colorado School of Mines to a 34-11 win over Northwest Kansas Tech at Volk Gym on Dec. 9.

The Orediggers improved to 2-0 in duals with five straight wins (four with bonus points) to end the meet. Mines recorded four falls and a major decision on the night.

Matthew Lavengood got things off to a good start with a fall at 1:48 to win over Danny Constant at 125 pounds. Lavengood was up 6-0 on an early takedown and nearfall-4.

Northwest Tech came back with wins in the next two matches as Levi Maes outlasted Caleb Micho 7-5 at 133 and Jake Wilson won 7-5 in sudden victory over Lukas Erickson. Erickson rode out the third period down a point to force overtime, but Wilson shot in at the edge of the mat to earn the two points and the win in SV-1.

Travis Torres then won at 149 pounds, 7-2 over Dominique Evans, keyed by a nearfall-4 in the second period and a commanding riding time advantage, and a post-match unsportsmanlike conduct penalty cost NWKT a team point. The Mavericks responded with Victor Haro's 48-second pin of Robert Gambrell at 157, however, temporarily putting them in the lead 11-9.

The turnaround began for the Orediggers at 165 pounds as John Crowley made his season debut and won a 3-2 thriller over Malik Holley. Down 1-0 heading into the third, Crowley chose bottom and quickly escaped, then took down Holley to lead 3-1. A late escape couldn't produce any more points for Holley as Crowley won 3-2.

That sparked the Orediggers to win the rest of their matches, and Krantz started it off at 174 pounds with the first of three straight falls. Up 6-2 after three takedowns in the first, Krantz stuck Hunter Lucas at 2:07; Breidenbach followed that up with a 1:27 pin of Aaron Hudson at 184 and Wilson needed only 31 seconds to turn a quick takedown into a fall over Turah Reed at 197 pounds. The three-match span turned a one-point lead for Mines at 12-11 into an unassailable 30-11 advantage.

The heavyweights put on a good match as Nick DeBruyn earned a 12-4 major decision over Torrey Reinhart. DeBruyn had a big first period with two takedowns and nearfall-4 to lead 9-2, then had a pair of escapes and riding time in the third to earn the four points.

Mines will break for the holidays and returns to action Jan. 6 against Simon Fraser.
