CANYON, Texas – Pitted against two NFCA top-15 squads, Colorado School of Mines softball was held to only two runs and eight hits in the opening day of the WT Woodward Invitational Friday, losing 10-2 (6) to No. 11 Angelo State and 11-0 (5) to No. 1 West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.
Mines (1-7) briefly held a 2-1 over Angelo State in the opener; sophomore Rebecca Fallon doubled home freshman Sonoma Toot and senior Cassie Ford with a two-out shot to left center in the visitor half of the fourth inning.
After only three hits in the first three frames, the Rambelles (8-0) came alive with nine over their final three at-bats, plating three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth on a game-ending grand slam.
Fallon, Toot, Ford, sophomore Paige Noehring, freshman Pua Fujinaga and sophomore Jackie Vasquez had one base hit apiece.
Sophomore pitcher Angela Eickelman (0-1) was dealt the loss, surrendering three earned runs and five hits across 3.1 innings.
With 2014 NCAA Division II College World Series MVP and two-time All-American Rita Hokianga toeing the rubber, WTAMU (6-1) dispatched the Orediggers in the second game with 11 runs and 12 hits in five innings.
Hokianga limted Mines to only two third-inning hits and four total baserunners, striking out eight on 71 pitches in 4.2 innings of work.
The defending national champs combined for three triples and two home runs, including a no-out, three-run shot to right center in the first.
Junior Elise Dugwyler led off the third with a bunt single and Noehring followed with an opposite field knock to left center, raising her hitting streak to eight straight in 2015 and 22 in a row overall – second-best in team annals.
Freshman Hallie Smith (1-4) struck out three over 4.0 innings in the loss.
Mines collides with two more Lone Star Conference foes on Saturday, meeting Midwestern State at 10:30 a.m. (MST) and Tarleton State at 2:30 p.m. at Buffalo Sports Park.
