HAYS, Kan. – Led by the first multi-home run game from sophomore Connor Lambert, Colorado School of Mines baseball sent three over the fence in a 5-3 win at Fort Hays State on Friday afternoon in Hays, Kan.
Lambert lifted his initial collegiate homer with one on and no out in the top of the first inning, and later turned on a two-out, solo blast down the leftfield line in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-2.
Junior Nate Olinger followed Lambert in the first with his initial long ball of the season to right.
FHSU (0-1) stayed close with one run in both the first and fourth innings, before the Orediggers went back in front three on a throwing error by the catcher in the eighth. The Tigers added the final tally with a two-out, ninth-inning RBI double.
Lambert and Olinger each finished 2-for-4, combining for the four RBI and four runs.
Redshirt senior Evan Brown (1-for-3), senior Zach Bothwell (1-for-3) and freshman Griffin Jones (1-for-4) rounded out the seven-hit output.
Junior Christian Rooney fanned a season-high eight with two earned runs allowed on five hits and two walks in 7.0 innings to improve to 2-0. Freshman Samuel Reed secured the 2.0-inning save, giving up one hit and one earned run.
Mines (4-0) will attempt to continue its best start since 2002 at 3 p.m. (MST) Saturday against Central Oklahoma at Larks Park in Hays.
