Women's Basketball Flourishes In Three-Point Shooting Tilt

GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines women's basketball won the battle from the perimeter, draining 15 three-pointers on the way to an 88-65 romp of New Mexico Highlands Friday evening at Lockridge Arena in Golden.

Mines (12-14, 7-13 RMAC) overcame 14 makes outside from the Cowgirls behind an RMAC season-best 15-of-31 (.484) tries, led by five apiece by seniors Sam Rusk and Taylor Helbig.

Rusk sank 5-of-8 and 6-of-10 overall to lead all scorers with 19. Helbig shot 5-of-12 behind the arc, closing with 15 and a game-high tying three steals.

The Orediggers connected on 61.5 percent (8-of-13) of its first half three-point attempts, building a 47-36 halftime advantage. Mines finished 7-of-18 (.389) in the second and was 32-of-74 (.432) overall for the game.

Junior Courtney Martin had 13 points; sophomore Laura Tyree recorded her initial double-double with 13 and a career-high 11 assists, establishing the program single-season record at 131, and freshman Elizabeth Tomon posted 11 and a game-best eight rebounds off the bench.

The women staked a 31-3 advantage in points off turnovers and 13-0 margin in fast break scoring, turning the Cowgirls over on 17 occasions.

NMHU (6-18, 5-15 RMAC) ended 23-of-56 (.411) and 14-of-35 (.400) from distance.

Jenny Johnson paced the Cowgirls with 17 points. Anngelina Sanchez and Giulia Simioni each had 13.

Mines continues its three-game homestand at 5 p.m. Saturday against Western New Mexico. As part of its annual Senior Day celebration, the team will recognize the senior class immediately following the game.
