Roup Wins Weight Throw; Track Teams Sit First, Fifth At RMAC Races

GUNNISON – Led by senior weight throw champion Austin Roup, Colorado School of Mines track and field produced 10 All-RMAC performances Friday at the 2015 RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in Gunnison.

Roup returned to the podium for the second time in three seasons, claiming his third all-conference honor in the event behind a spin of 18.06 meters. Junior Jacob Hollister placed fourth out of 14 with an NCAA provisional 16.71 meters.

The 2014 RMAC runner-up in the hammer throw, Roup has thrown a qualifying distance in seven straight meets, including a school record 60-2.5 (18.35m) at the season-opening Alumni Open in December.

Redshirt junior Phil Schneider ran runner-up of 26 in the 5000 in 15:52.43 and was joined on the All-RMAC team by sophomore Dan Mahoney in fourth (15:53.93) and junior Roy Bowling in sixth (15:56.04). Sophomore Nathanael Williams scored eighth in 16:06.27.

The Orediggers also touted three on the all-conference pole vault list. Seniors Ben Timmer and Justin Gildemeister finished 2-3 with Division II top-20 provisional heights; Timmer broke the 2003 program record held by Zane Prickett at 4.91 meters and Gildemeister cleared a personal-best 4.81 meters.

Sophomore Jessie Berndsen repeated as a Second Team All-RMAC choice, taking third at 3.25 meters.

Reigning senior RMAC Field Athlete of the Week Michelle Rigsby ranked fifth among 18 in the deeply-talented women's long jump, which featured five of Division II's top-eight jumpers, with a bound of 5.58 meters.

Junior Ann Miller, sophomore Elizabeth Gabel, junior McKenzie Zeman and junior Chloe Gustafson earned runner-up in the DMR in a provisional 12:17.18, while freshman Josh Hoskinson, senior Garrett Hoch, sophomore Patrick Weaver and junior Marty Andrie combined for a fourth-place qualifying time of 10:17.99.

Gabel and junior Ian Rozier both advanced to the finals of the 400 as Gabel timed third of 25 in 58.37 and Rozier first of 22 in a provisional 49.25.

With six events scored, the Orediggers sit first out of nine men's teams at 51 points and fifth of 11 women's squads with 20.

The two-day championships continue Saturday at Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
