SAN ANGELO, Texas – Early inning deficits proved troublesome Sunday as Colorado School of Mines softball concluded the George McCorkle Challenge with a 9-4 loss to NFCA No. 11 Angelo State and 4-0 shutout to Texas A&M International at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (6-0) sent five runs across in the first on two hits and two errors and two more between the second and third frames.
Mines cut the margin to 7-4 with a four-run, three-hit fourth inning. Sophomore Jackie Vasquez plated one on a groundout to third; sophomore Angela Eickelman and junior Elise Dugwyler each drew bases-loaded walks, and junior Dana Gallegos had an RBI single up the middle.
The Orediggers left the bases full and ASU added two in the sixth to remain undefeated.
Vasquez, Gallegos, sophomore Paige Noehring and freshman Pua Fujinaga each batted 1-for-4.
Freshman Sonoma Toot was 1-for-3 and Dugwyler 1-for-1 with two walks.
Freshman Hallie Smith fell to 1-3 in the circle, permitting five earned runs and 11 hits with two strikeouts over the 6.0 innings.
TAMIU (2-5) obtained a 1-0 lead on a first-inning RBI double and did not allow a runner to reach third in completing the five-hit shutout.
Noehring, Gallegos, Vasquez, senior Cassie Ford and freshman Brielle Asato combined for the five base hits.
Noehring ran her hitting streak to 20 straight games – tied for second-longest in the team archives with Molly Thiebaut – with a two-out, fifth-inning single as she completed the six-game weekend 10-for-23 (.435).
Junior Kristen Prudhomme (0-2) surrendered four earned runs on 12 hits and struck out four in 6.0 innings.
The Orediggers (1-5) return to the Lone Star State next weekend to continue the non-conference schedule with the Woodward Invitational, hosted by No. 1 West Texas A&M Feb. 13-15 at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas.
