GOLDEN – Freshman Hallie Smith held up an early 5-1 lead and Colorado School of Mines softball upset RMAC leader Regis, 6-4, in game one of the teams' four-game series on Saturday at CSM Softball Field.
Smith (5-13) silenced the Rangers over the final four frames, fanning four of her season-high eight batters and allowing only two base hits. The Livingston, Texas native scattered four earned runs on nine hits and two walks en route to her sixth complete game.
Junior Dana Gallegos provided the offensive spark, hitting 2-for-4 and tying the Mines (5-26, 3-14 RMAC) single-game record with two triples, including a bases-clearing rip down the right field chalk in the second.
Sophomore Paige Noehring recorded her team-high tying fourth three-hit game with a 3-for-4, one-RBI effort and senior Cassie Ford (1-for-3) drove in two on second-inning double.
Sophomore Rebecca Fallon (1-for-3) and freshman Pua Fujinaga (1-for-3) each added one hit.
The Rangers (19-9, 14-3 RMAC) earned the split behind a 12-0, five-inning final in game two as Nicole Hull and Rachelle Knudson combined for a one-hit shutout.
Mines concludes the series and its 10-game homestand with an 11 a.m. doubleheader Sunday in Golden.
