GOLDEN – Senior Cassie Ford provided the Senior Day magic in game one and Colorado School of Mines softball held back a fast-charging Western New Mexico squad in the finale to sweep its last home doubleheader of the season Sunday, 4-3 and 6-5.
Following a two-out single from freshman Sonoma Toot and walks by sophomores Angela Eickelman and Rebecca Fallon in the bottom of the seventh, Ford provided Mines (10-31, 8-19 RMAC) its third home walk-off in 2015, lacing the ninth pitch of her at-bat to straightaway center field.
Ford went 1-for-2 with two sacrifice bunts and the one RBI, moving into a tie for third on the program's career RBI list with Kaleigh Starr (2007-10) at 136.
Sophomore Paige Noehring hit 1-for-4, driving in two on second-inning single up the middle, and freshman Pua Fujinaga closed 1-for-3 with a go-ahead RBI double along the left field line in the sixth.
Freshman Hallie Smith (8-16) yielded three earned runs and six hits with six strikeouts on the rubber, posting her second 7.0-inning decision in as many starts.
The Orediggers bounced back from a first-inning, three-run homer by WNMU (19-24, 16-16 RMAC) in game two with consecutive three-run frames in the third and fourth. The Mustangs got within one after two scores in the fifth, but were slowed to just two hits across their final two at-bats by Kristen Prudhomme.
Making her last home start, Prudhomme (2-11) needed only 88 pitches for her fourth complete game as the academic senior strewn three earned runs on nine hits and walk across the 7.0 innings.
Toot provided the punch at the plate with three RBI and a run on 2-for-4 batting. Fallon (1-for-3) drove in one off an opposite field single in the third and Eickelman (1-for-3) added one on a tailing triple in the fourth.
Noehring hit 2-for-3 with a triple and one run.
Mines heads to Colorado Springs next weekend for its second and final two-day, three-team pod; the women meet host UCCS at 10 a.m. and Fort Lewis at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
