GRAND JUNCTION – No. 2/4 Colorado Mesa rallied with the deciding score in its final at-bat of both baseball games against Colorado School of Mines Friday, delivering the Orediggers a stinging doubleheader sweep, 8-7 and 4-3, in Grand Junction.

Mines (19-23, 13-21 RMAC) held respective leads of 4-1 and 2-0 through three frames in each contest only to see the RMAC regular season champion Mavericks come alive in the middle innings to run their record to 20-2 at Suplizio Field.

The Orediggers built the three-run game one margin on only three hits, generating four walks and a sacrifice fly across their initial three plate appearances.

Leadoff home runs by junior Nate Olinger and senior Zach Bothwell in the fifth and eighth inning resulted in scores of 6-3 and 7-7.

Olinger was one of three Orediggers with two hits, batting 2-for-5 with the RBI and run scored. Sophomore Cody Marvel hit 2-for-5 and classmate Connor Lambert 2-for-4 with one RBI and a walk.

Bothwell went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run. He was matched by senior Shane Johnson, who had a two-run double in the three-run first for his sixth straight game with an extra-base hit and fifth with at least two RBI.

Seven individuals accounted for the seven-hit output in the night cap.

Lambert, junior Kyle Alexander and Bothwell, the 4-5-6 hitters in the lineup, each drove in one; Lambert and Bothwell recorded RBI singles in the third and Lambert found the hole in the left side in the fifth.

Lambert and Alexander each ended 1-for-4, while Bothwell drew a fifth-inning walk to finish 1-for-3.

Despite a career-high 11 strikeouts – more than any Mines pitcher in the last five seasons – Olinger fell to 5-5 on the hill. The reigning RMAC Pitcher of the Week surrendered just three earned runs on six hits and two walks over the 6.2 innings.

The teams meet at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regular season finale doubleheader.
