How It Happened

The nationally sixth-ranked Colorado School of Mines (5-1) volleyball team split the opening day of the University of Indianapolis Tournament as they fell to No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth and then defeated host UIndy (2-5) on Friday, September 11 at Nicoson Hall.

I game one, the Orediggers dropped their first match of the season as they fell to the Bulldogs by the final of 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-20). Mines rebounded in the day's final contest as they came-from-behind to defeat the host Greyhounds, 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-22).

The Orediggers were undone by hitting errors of their own and the excellent defense of the Bulldogs in their opening contest. CSM hit a paltry .089-to-.330 and UMD had 14 blocks to only one for Mines.

Trailing only 6-4 in the opening set, Mines committed five errors that led to a subsequent 6-1 run by Duluth that ultimately told the story of how the match would go as the Bulldogs took the frame, 25-14.

Set No. 2 was much closer with one-point separating the two teams until the midway point of the period. Ultimately, UMD took an 11-10 lead and stretched it to an 18-13 advantage it would never relinquish enroute to a 25-19 set victory.

The final frame saw Mines actually jump out to a quick 6-0 lead which was led by a pair of kills from junior Alanna Winfield and senior Megan Peterson. After that, Duluth settled in and clawed away at the lead until it finally took over at 17-16. The Bulldogs closed out the match on an 8-4 scamper to take the period, 25-20.

In the UIndy match, the Greyhounds were just a bit sharper as they took the opening set, 25-18. The ultimate difference in the frame was that Indianapolis hit for a higher percentage than the Orediggers, .325-to-.257.

Mines knotted the game match back at one apiece by holding on, 26-24, in closer than expected second set. The Orediggers would get out to what looked like to be a commanding 22-16 lead, but the Greyhounds fought all the back and took a 23-22 lead. Ultimately, CSM took the match when Peterson got back-to-back service aces to close out the period.

The momentum carried over into the third set as the Orediggers grabbed the early lead and never relinquished as they won, 25-19.  Peterson smashed out six kills on 10 attempts, without an error, to pace the visitors.

Not wanting to go to fifth set, Mines dug down deep and dug out of an early deficit to take the fourth and final frame, 25-22. The Orediggers got a balanced offensive effort in the set as four different players registered three kills.
