Box Score 2 How It Happened
Nationally sixth-ranked Colorado School of Mines (6-2) volleyball closed out its run at the UIndy Tournament with a tough 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 23-25) loss to No. 10 Wheeling Jesuit (5-2) and then followed it with a 3-1 (25-12, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21) win over Ashland University (4-3) on Saturday, September 12 at Nicoson Arena.
The Wheeling Jesuit match was decided by a razor-thin margin as a point here or there decided each set. A total of seven points was the difference in the Cardinals getting a 3-1 victory, and those seven points can be found in CSM's four more attacking errors (28-to-24) and WJC's three more blocks (15-to-12).
Mines took the opening frame 25-23 by getting five kills from senior Frannie Cormier and four from senior Megan Peterson. Wheeling Jesuit came right back to tie the game at one apiece with their own 25-23 victory in the second set.
The Cardinals got the largest margin of victory by either team in set No. 3 as they eked out a 25-22 win. The difference in the set being that WJC got one more kill, one more block and committed one less attacking error. Down 21-19 late in the period, the Cardinals used a 5-0 run to essentially take the set.
Mines, now in a do-or-die situation, found themselves locked in another super tight battle. The fourth set had 29 ties and 12 lead changes, and with the match tied at 23 each it was two attacking errors at the end that proved to be the difference.
The Orediggers took out their frustration with WJC match on Ashland as they jumped all over the Eagles to take the first two sets by the scores of 25-12 and 25-16. Freshman Janice Jin notched eight kills over the two frames and junior Alanna Winfield was right behind with seven.
Ashland did respond with 25-21 win in the third frame as they jumped out to an early lead they never relinquished. Mines was sloppy in the frame with nine attacking errors, and the Eagles' Casey Clark chipped in four kills.
Then in the fourth set, Colorado School of Mines broke out of an early deficit and got out to lead by as much as five (18-13) and cruised to relatively easy 25-21 set win to close out the match. Winfield paced the attack with five kills in the frame and senior Corrine Din led the defense with 11 digs.
