Box Score How It Happened
Playing 22nd-ranked St. Edward's University (2-0-2), Colorado School of Mines (2-0-1) pulled out a hardfought 1-1 draw on Sunday, September 13 at the Stermole Soccer Stadium.
The first half was tough sledding for both teams as SEU out-shot CSM 5-4, but Mines had the only shot on goal. That lone shot on goal came in the 27th-minute by freshman John Haist.
The action picked up a bit in the second half as the Orediggers came out much more aggressive. The first real chance at a goal for Mines came in the 57th-minute when sophomore Bryce Townsend blasted a shot towards goal off a rebound, but he hit it too hard and the ball went over the crossbar.
A little less than three minutes (59:28) later Colorado School of Mines threatened again when senior Joe Haines was fed a nifty back heel from sophomore Preston Migaki. Unfortunately, he found nothing but the "wood-work" when it bounced off the cross bar.
Those missed opportunities came back to haunt the Orediggers when the Hilltoppers ended the scoreless affair. SEU's Josh Taylor crossed in ball that found the foot of Dylan Armstrong for a 1-0 lead at the 64:23-mark.
The SEU goal seemed to spark Mines as only 33 seconds later sophomore Nikolaus Grotz earned a penalty kick. Grotz calmly beat the St. Edward's keeper for a goal into the bottom left of the net.
Colorado School of Mines appeared to have the game-winner when senior Jared Herselman delivered a perfect free kick that found that head of Joe Haines, but his aim was little off and he nodded it over the crossbar.
The 110-minutes seemed to weigh on both teams as neither really mustered a good shot in either overtime period which left the game a 1-1 draw.
