Box Score How It Happened
24th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (3-0-1) scored often and early as it battered nearby rival Colorado Christian (0-5) to the tune of 6-0 to kick-off its RMAC campaign on Wednesday, September 16 at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
Mines opened up the scoring with sophomores Preston Migaki and Nikolaus Grotz linking up for the first two goals of the contest. Both goals were eerily similar to each other with Grotz streaking down the right side of the box, crossing to his left and finding Migaki who tapped both in at the ninth and 14th-minute, correspondingly.
On CSM's next two goals it was a pair of defenders who got in on the fun as senior Jared Herselman and sophomore Bryce Townsend scored the third and fourth goals, respectively. At the 31:08-mark, Herselman barreled down the left flank and blasted a shot that ricocheted off the CCU keeper and in. Then Townsend scored his first career goal when he slid-tapped in freshman Josh Haist's cross at 33:14.
The fifth and final goal of the half came when Herselman was taken down in the box to earn a penalty kick with two and a half minutes left in the period. John Haist calmly took the attempt and blasted it in to left side of the net.
Then, only three minutes and 40 seconds into the second half, Mines got its sixth and final goal of the match when Herselman took a free kick from 30 yards out the left side and found a streaking senior Joe Haines who headed his first goal of the season into the right bottom corner.
