How It Happened
Just like last night's win against S.D. Mines, the 11th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (8-2, 2-0) asserted its dominance early as it controlled Black Hills State (3-7, 0-2) by the final of 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) on Saturday, September 19 at Lockridge Arena. On the weekend, Mines defeated both RMAC institutions from South Dakota to kick off its league campaign.
CSM got out to a 15-7 lead quickly in the first set to force a BHSU timeout. They used the opening run to cruise to an easy 25-16 set victory. Senior Megan Peterson was superb in the frame as she drilled six kills at a .455 clip.
The second set was much tighter until midway through the period when the Orediggers took an 11-11 tie and ballooned it into a 20-14 advantage they never relinquished. That 9-3 run included four kills from Peterson who had seven total in the period.
After a short intermission, Mines picked right up where they left off as they jumped out to a commanding 17-3 lead to start the third set. That crucial run was sparked by three kills from Peterson, senior Frannie Cormier and junior Alanna Winfield each.
The Yellowjackets attempted to make a bit of comeback when they narrowed the score to 23-18, but they didn't have enough juice as the Orediggers closed out the frame and game, 25-19.
