How It Happened

#19 Colorado School of Mines (5-0-1, 3-0) men's soccer remains undefeated in RMAC play as it pulled out an overtime thriller at MSU Denver (4-2-1, 2-1) on Friday, September 25 at the Regency Athletic Complex in downtown Denver. A 94th-minute goal from senior Richard Garvey gave Mines a crucial 1-0 victory.

Garvey's game winner came when sophomore Ryan Blarr teed up center pass in the box that Garvey was able to knock in low for his third of the season.

Up until that point, the game was going to be known as one of near misses for both teams.

The first half saw both teams get its fair shake of chances, but Mines was the more unlucky of the two teams as they had two would-be goals taken off the board. First, in the fourth minute, junior David Bolt got a ton of space at the top of the box and took a shot that hit off the crossbar. What made the attempt doubly unlucky was that the Metro keeper was completely beat.

The Orediggers other really good attempt came in the 23rd-minute when senior Joe Haines had a goal wiped off the scoreboard when he was deemed offside after a perfect free kick found him in the at the far post.

The second half was fast and furious as both teams came out more aggressive and more willing to take chances. The Roadrunners had a flurry of quality shots over a four-minute period that started at 56:22. Metro took five shots and earned three corner kicks during that flurry.

Over the last 15 minutes of regulation, both teams got several tremendous looks that could have been game winners. For Mines, Blarr, freshman John Haist and sophomore Nikolaus Grotz all got incredible looks that were turned back.
