How It Happened

#12 Colorado School of Mines (8-3, 2-1) volleyball drops its first RMAC contest of the season as they fell on the road to Western State (3-11, 1-2) by the final of 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 21-25, 25-27)  on Friday, September 25 at Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison, Colo.

In the opening frame, Mines came out sluggish and fell behind 10-5 to the home standing Mountaineers. Behind the strong play of junior Alanna Winfield, the Orediggers broke an 18-18 deadlock to take the opening frame, 25-19. Winfield drilled three of her six kills in the period during that final run.

The next two sets were ones that the Orediggers would have liked to forget as they didn't hit well at all as Western State took the frames, 25-20 and 25-21. Through the first three sets, Mines hit a paltry .132 which led to the deficit.

Now trailing 2-1, Colorado School of Mines came out much more focused in the fourth set. The Orediggers got to a 15-11 lead and looked to be on their way to tying the contest, but the Mountaineers steadied the ship and came back to tie the period at 17.

From there, both teams traded points back-and-forth until they reach a 24-24 tie. Subsequent back-to-back attacking errors from Mines proved to be its undoing as it dropped its first RMAC contest, 27-25. Winfield and freshman Janice Jin each had five kills in the final frame.
