Second-half goals by Laya Rybicki and Acacia Ortiz pushed #4 Mines past West Texas A&M to pick up their first win of the season on Sept. 5.
The Orediggers (1-1-0), playing at Dallas Baptist, dominated the game with a 27-9 shots advantage while Sam Zumbro backstopped her first career shutout with four saves.
A frustrating first half saw Mines take 14 shots but come away without a goal, but Rybicki broke the deadlock off Cari Smith's assist in the 64th minute. Ortiz netted her first career goal just over three minutes from time on an unassisted strike.
Notables
- Caitlin Kaltenbaugh led Mines with six shots. Eight Orediggers had multiple shots.
- Zumbro had three first-half saves and one stop in the second for her cleansheet. CSM's defense only allowed nine shots with four on frame.
- Ortiz, a freshman, looked dangerous in Mines' opener against DBU and kept up the pressure with three shots.
- WTAM's Courtney Dippel did all she could to keep her side in the game with 12 saves, including eight in the first half.
