How It Happened

Colorado School of Mines men's soccer moved to 2-0 on the season by defeating Regis University (1-1) 2-1 in overtime in a non-conference road match on Tuesday, September 8.

Before the contest, Mines head coach Frank Kohlenstein and Regis head coach Tony McCall participated in the second annual "Kenleigh's Cause" bike ride. In honor of RU head coach Tony McCall's daughter Kenleigh, "Kenleigh's Cause" is an initiative to raise awareness and money for the Global Down Syndrome Foundation.

After dominating much of the first half, Mines got a much deserved goal for their creative thinking as freshman John Haist found the back of the net for the first time in his young career. Haist broke the scoreless deadlock by navigating through several Regis defenders in the box to give CSM a 1-0 lead in the 34th-minute

The Orediggers likely should have had at least another goal at the 22:29-mark when sophomore Preston Migaki had a 1v1 situation with RU keeper Christian Nicolosi, but it was not to be as he just missed the top right corner.

Senior Joe Haines nearly made it 2-0 off an expertly taken free kick at 52', but Nicolosi punched out what was almost certainly a would be goal.

Regis finally leveled the game at one apiece when Elliot Sutcliffe earned a dubious penalty kick that he cashed in on at 71:08. Both Sutcliffe and a CSM defender jumped up for a header and the lead official decided that there was a little too much physicality for his liking.

Haist then looked to have the would-be-winner when he tried to head home a redirect off the head of senior Ryan Leach at 73:06, but once again RU keeper Nicolosi made a miraculous save to deny the freshman's second of goal of the contest.

While both teams traded close calls in the first overtime period, the score remained 1-1 after the first 10 minutes.

Haist looked to end the game once again in the second overtime period when he nodded another sure-fire goal towards the net with the Nicolosi out of goal. The Rangers wiggled off the hook when a defender backed up his keeper and bodied the attempt out of the net.

Then, with 1:22 left in the second overtime period, sophomore Nikolaus Grotz earned a penalty kick and sent home the ensuing PK for the 2-1 winner.
