New program records were set as the Colorado School of Mines (10-2, 8-0) women's basketball held off a feisty Adams State (2-9, 1-7) squad by the final of 75-66 to sweep the season series with the Grizzlies on Friday, January 8.
Mines has now set a new program record for consecutive victories with tonight's 10th straight. The Orediggers also assisted on 24 of their 28 made baskets which is also new program record for assists in a game.
CSM started out very strong as they scored the first seven points of the game which included a three-pointer from freshman Cassidy Budge. ASU would narrow the Mines advantage back to three (11-8) before the Orediggers pushed the back out to eight on a three ball from freshman Anna Kollmorgen and then a bucket from sophomore Paige Husa.
Leading 20-15 at the end of one, Mines pushed its lead out to 25-15 a minute and half into the second quarter on Budge's second made basket from deep followed by a layup from redshirt-freshman Mikaela Moore – senior Courtney Martin assisted on both baskets. Mines then got out by as much as 12 (32-20) – on another high-low action of Martin to Moore – at the 5:19 mark as they really started to assert their superiority. CSM essentially held the margin the rest of the half as they took a 41-33 lead into the break.
The eight to 10-point difference remained for most of the third quarter until the end of the period when Mines ended it on a 7-2 run that was sparked by redshirt-freshman Emily Bailey's lone three ball of the half. The Orediggers outscored ASU 16-10 in the third which principally put the game away.
Mines then got to a game-high 20 to lead 70-50 with around three and half minutes as they started to sub in reserves. Adams State refusted to go away lightly as Mines had to withstand a final 16-5 run by the Grizzles to get the 75-66 victory.
While the Griz caught fire at the end of the game, Mines' lead was never seriously threatened. Leading 71-64, Martin scored the final four points of the game for the Orediggers to ice the game.
Notables
- The victory gives Mines its 10th consecutive victory which broke an 11 year old record of nine straight that was set during the 2004-05 season.
- After a game in which they only had nine total assists, the Orediggers got the message from head coach Brittany Simpson and shared the ball to tune of 24 assists on 28 made baskets which is new school record.
- In fact, Mines assisted of 14 of their 15 baskets in the first half. Courtney Martin assisted on five them. Martin went on to set a new career high with eight assists tonight. She also had 18 points, snagged seven rebounds and blocked three shots to lead the team.
- Martin wasn't CSM's leading scorer though as freshman Cassidy Budge recorded a new career-high of 19 points. The Colorado Springs native just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to go along with three assists.
- The Orediggers outrebound the Grizzlies 47-25, and had a staggering 20 offensive rebounds for 17 second-chance points.
- Also reaching double-digits in the scoring column was Mikaela Moore who had 14 points off the bench and four assists. Moore picked Adam State's pocket twice.
- Sophomore Elizabeth Tomon also had a nice night off the pine with six points and four rebounds (all offensive) in only 10 minutes of action.

CSM will look to keep the 10-game win streak going tomorrow night at home against Fort Lewis at 5 p.m. The Orediggers defeated FLC back on December 11 by the narrow margin of 57-56.
