Mines begins the last week of regular season play with Colorado Christian and CSU-Pueblo visiting Golden this week.
POSTSEASON BERTH CLINCHED
While the Orediggers only went 1-1 last weekend, they still clinched their spot in the 2016 RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament. After picking up a 1-0 win at Adams State, Mines only needed to either win their next game at Fort Lewis, or have CSU-Pueblo lose to Regis. The Orediggers may have lost a tough 1-0 contest at Fort Lewis, but Regis took care of CSU-P to lock up Mines' postseason plans.
RMAC STANDINGS
The participants for the RMAC Tournament are set, but the order is still up in the air as the regular season draws to a close. #21 Colorado Mesa has a six-point lead on second-place and #7 Regis with the two team's set to meet this upcoming Friday afternoon. Fort Lewis (25), UCCS (24), Mines (23) and MSU Denver (22) make up spots three-six with only one point separating each. Fort Lewis will play both UCCS and MSU Denver this weekend while Mines has last-place Colorado Christian and seventh-place CSU-Pueblo.
BREAKOUT FRESHMAN
Trevor Amann continues to be one of the league's top goal scorers with an impressive team-leading nine on the season. The Westminster, Colo. native is third in the league in goals scored and in points (19). His latest goal was the equalizer in Mines' courageous comeback to earn a draw with Fort Lewis two weeks ago.
THE ASSIST MEN
Mines has an impressive four different players with at least four assists this season.
Nikolaus Grotz leads the way with six while defender
Ryan Blarr is one behind him with five. Both
John Haist and
Jackson Shelledy each have four on the season. Those four Orediggers have assisted on 60% of the 32 goals scored this season by Mines.Â
THE SERIES
Mines holds a commanding 34-10-2 all-time lead against Colorado Christian, and beat them earlier in the season over in Lakewood by the final of 7-0 with goals from
John Haist,
David Boldt,
Ford Edwards,
Matthew Summerfield,
Tyler Mertens and two from
Trevor Amann. The Orediggers also hold a 31-9-4 advantage over CSU-Pueblo, and hold a 3-0 victory over them back on September 18th.Â
SCOUTING CCU
While the Cougars record (1-15, 1-11) isn't great, it doesn't take into account the good soccer they have been playing as of late. They had two narrow losses to Fort Lewis, took Adams State to overtime and lost one goal matches to Westminster, S.D. Mines, and Regis since they last played the Orediggers. Blake Goodale is the team's top offensive threat with six goals on the season. Starting goalkeeper Brandon Eide has a .713 save percentage while making a staggering 137 saves this season.
SCOUTING CSU-PUEBLO
Being eliminated from RMAC postseason competition was a real blow to the Thunderwolves who had won four of their last five matches prior to the Regis contest. CSU-Pueblo will roll into Golden with a 7-9 overall record and a 5-7 mark in the RMAC, and with a balanced offensive attack that has three players with at least three goals scored. Top among them is Miles Sanchez who has a team-high five on the season. Starting goalkeeper Erich Frey has been a big key to CSU-P's second-half surge as he has a 1.79 GAA and is saving .675 of shots faced.
