Mines hits the road and heads westward-bound as they take on RMAC-co-leader Colorado Mesa and Westminster this weekend.
LAST WEEKEND REWIND
This past weekend can't be considered anything other than a success as Mines defeated South Dakota Mines & Technology 3-0 at home on Friday night. They then earned a hard-fought scoreless draw at then-#9 Regis. That draw as the first non-victory for the Rangers this season, and the Orediggers pulled it off while playing a man down for the last 50 minutes.
RMAC HONORS
Leading the way in those back-to-back shutouts was junior defender
Ryan Blarr who was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. First, the Littleton native tied a program single-game record with three assists in the 3-0 victory of SDSMT. He and the Orediggers also held the Hardrockers to only two shots on goal. Blarr then followed that by holding #9 Regis to a scoreless draw over 110 minutes of action.
IN THE STANDINGS
Mines currently sits in a two-way tie fourth in the RMAC after three weeks of league play. The Orediggers currently sit on 13 points (4-1-1 record) with MSU Denver. Regis and Colorado Mesa are tied at the top with 16 points while Fort Lewis is in third with 15 points. UCCS is right behind Mines with 12 points on the season.
STATISCIAL RANKINGS
The Orediggers are currently second in the RMAC in both goals scored per game (2.1) and goals allowed (.60). Freshman
Trevor Amann is third in the league in points (14) and goals (7) while
Ryan Blarr is tied for third with five assists. Starting goalkeeper
Leo Chely is second in the RMAC in both GAA (.580) and save percentage (.842).Â
THE SERIES
This will be the 20th ever meeting between Mines and Colorado Mesa with the Orediggers holding the all-time lead 15-4-0. Last season, Mines defeated CMU 1-0 in the regular season, and then again in the RMAC Tournament Championship, 2-1. The Orediggers also hold a 6-4 all-time lead against Westminster; Mines defeated the Griffins last season 6-0 in Golden.
SCOUTING MESA/WESTMINSTER
Tied at the top of the RMAC standings, Colorado Mesa (6-1-3, 5-0-1) is a formidable team whose overall numbers are eerily similar to Mines. The Mavericks boast the league's top goal scorer in Roy Abergil who has put 13 between the posts for a conference-best 26 points. Moshe Perez is tied with Blarr with five assists on the season. Westminster, on the other hand, is struggling with a 2-7 overall record and a 1-5 mark in league play. The Griffins average less than a goal per game (.889) and concede more than two (2.33). Cristian Alfaro is the team's top weapon with six points (2G, 2A).Â
