How It Happened
The 16th-ranked Colorado School of Mines shook off a slow start and still earned a 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-13) sweep of visiting Fort Lewis College on Friday, October 7 in Lockridge Arena.
Mines (13-3, 7-0) were in serious danger of dropping both of the first two sets of the match to a feisty Skyhawks (4-11, 3-4) squad, but were able to persevere and remain undefeated at both at home and in RMAC play.
The Orediggers fell behind FLC from the start in the opening frame, and trailed by as much as six (16-10) midway through. Mines slowly chipped away at Skyhawks advantage and finally tied the match at 24 apiece after a timeout. The Orediggers never led in the set until an attack error followed by an ace from
Marina Hansen gave them the 26-24 win.
Set No. 2 was more a back-and-forth affair with the Skyhawks once again proving to be a formidable foe. Tied at 23-23,
LaRose Currie put the Orediggers up for good with her set-high fifth kill, and FLC's Matisse Monty sealed the Mines victory with an attack error.
Now up two-sets to nothing, Mines finally found its groove on offense and went up 9-0 out of the gates en route to run away with a 25-13 blowout in the third and final frame.
Alanna Winfield supplied five kills in the set while Currie and
Janice Jin each chipped in four.
Notables
- Big reason the Orediggers were able to fight through the first two sets was because of the play of senior libero
Taryn Huber. The already two-time RMAC Defensive Player of the Week had a game-high 21 digs of the Orediggers' 57 on the night.
-
LaRose Currie and
Alanna Winfield each had a game-best 13 kills. Currie nearly missed a double-double with nine digs.
- The top hitting performance of the night went to
Janice Jin who hit at a .375 clip with eight kills.
- Of Mines' nine blocks on the night, five came in the blow out third set. Conversely, Fort Lewis had 10 blocks in the first two frames, but only one in the third.
