ST. LEO, Fla. – Colorado School of Mines had an incredible finish to the 2016 season as the men took third and the women placed 13th at the NCAA D-II Cross Country National Championships at The Abbey Course on the campus of St. Leo University.
The third-place finish by the men was their eighth straight top-five finish at the national championships. While the 13th-place showing by the women was spurred on by the incredible finishes of
Hanna Barringer and
Megan Wenham.
Men's Race
The men were denied a second straight national championship and the sweep of the major championships this year as they finished third overall. Mines finished with 153 total points to place behind Adams State (54) and Grand Valley State (79).
RMAC Freshman of the Year
Logan Ramlet led the way for the Orediggers in a time of 30:52.7 to place 20th overall, and earn his first All-American award. Ramlet made his big move between the 5 and 6.7k split where he jumped from 38th to 25th.
Earning his third consecutive All-American accolade was senior
Nathanael Williams who placed 26th overall in a time of 31:02.3. Williams was consistent throughout the race as he quickly got into the top-20 and remained there until the end.
Coming in a pack together was the trio of sophomore
Josh Hoskinson (31:20.9), sophomore
Ben Schneiderman (31:21.5) and senior
Dan Mahoney (31:24.0) who finished 42nd, 43rd and 45th, respectively. Hoskinson made his move over the final 2.3k as he moved up from 64th-to-42nd to be Mines' biggest mover on the morning.
To round out the Orediggers runners were junior
Nick Sevcik and sophomore
Grant Colligan who placed in 51st and 54th with times of 31:30.9 and 31:36.2, respectively.
RMAC rivals Western State (6th) and CSU-Pueblo (9th) also finished within the top-10 in the team scoring.
Women's Race
Coming in ranked 16th in the final poll before the championships, the women had a great race and will finish 13th with a final tally of 368. The difference between 11th-place Cedarville (365) and 14th-place Northern Michigan (369) was a razor thin four points.
Leading the way for the Orediggers was senior
Hanna Barringer who will finish with a career-best at nationals 52nd-place finish. The Parker native ran a time of 21:48.5, and made her big move between the 3 and 4.2k split where she jumped from 77th to 58th.
Coming in next, and making her nationals debut, was sophomore
Megan Wenham who took 73rd in a time of 22:02.7.
Michaela Reynolds wasn't far behind as she placed 86th overall in a time of 22:12.01 to round out the Mines runners in the top-100.
The next two runners for the Orediggers were both making their NCAA D-II National Championships debuts as freshman
Brook Eberle and sophomore
Kara Burton placed 112th and 124th, respectively. Eberle finished in a time of 22:27.2 while Burton crossed the finish line in 22:34.5.
The final two Orediggers to come into the chute were senior
Elizabeth Starbuck and junior
Molly Reicher. Starbuck finished 130th in a time of 22:39.1, and Reicher was in 173rd at 23:09.5.
Grand Valley State defeated defending national champion Adams State, 116-139. RMAC rival Western State took third with 168 points. Conference foes CSU-Pueblo (16th) and UCCS (20th) also finished within the top-20.
