ANAHEIM, Calif. – A double-double from junior forward
Elizabeth Tomon led Colorado School of Mines to hard-fought 66-64 victory over the University of Mary on day two of the CCA D-II Tip-Off Classic.
Mines (1-1) bounced back from yesterday's loss with a dominant showing on the boards as they out-rebounded the Marauders (0-2) 51-36 and more importantly 17-3 on offensive rebounds which led to a decisive 13-3 advantage on second chance points.
The first half was a see-saw battle with Mary outscoring Mines by five (18-12) in the first quarter followed by Mines outscoring by Mary by five (17-12) in the second to reach a 30-30 tie at the half.
The third quarter saw no change in that as both team's scored exactly 12 points each which set the stage for a decisive fourth quarter.Â
Trailing by one, Mines took the lead 46-45 on an
Elizabeth Tomon jumper at the 9:03 mark in the fourth quarter. The Orediggers eventually built the lead to as much as seven (61-54), but Mary came storming back and tied the game at 61-61 with 52 seconds remaining.
From there, the Mines defense locked in and
Mikaela Moore and
Anna Kollmorgen iced the game away at the free throw line.

Elizabeth Tomon put together a second straight strong performance as she had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double.Â
-Â Â Â Mines' dominance on the offensive glass (17-3) was so important because they only shot 33.3% from the field while Mary shot 43.1%.
-Â Â Â Speaking of the offensive rebounding dominance, the Orediggers had four players with at least three offensive boards with
Mikaela Moore leading the way with five of them.

Anna Kollmorgen just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
