SPEARFISH, S.D. - Black Hills State's Jonas Anderson hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 17 seconds left and the Yellow Jackets upset #18/23 Colorado School of Mines 57-56.
On a night in which both teams struggled to kickstart their offenses, Mines shot only 29 percent (18-of-62). The game featured eight ties and nine lead changes as BHSU ended the game on a 9-2 run to erase a six-point Mines lead.
Mines led much of the early going before Black Hills State went up by four on the back of a 13-2 run midway through the first half. The Orediggers responded by reeling off nine straight points, with
Caleb Waitsman hitting six straight in that span, to take a 26-24 lead into the break.
The two sides went back and forth in the second half before
Ben Clare and
Ben Sonnefeld hit consecutive and-one opportunities to seize control of the game, 54-48, with 3:53 remaining. A Zach McLemore three and Fraser Malcom's free throw with 2:17 remaining cut the Mines lead to 54-52, and Jonas Anderson's layup out of a Mines timeout tied it with 1:43 left.
Mines caught a break as Max Mueller (11 rebounds) fouled out with a minute to go, and Natesan went to the line to take back the lead. The advantage lasted only seconds before Anderson hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds remaining to go up 57-56; Mines had looks from
Luke Schroepfer and Waitsman to win it, but couldn't get one to fall as time expired.
