Box Score How It Happened
It was over early as the Colorado School of Mines (18-5, 16-3) buried Western New Mexico (8-17, 5-14) to the tune of 75-37 behind a stifling defensive effort on Saturday, February 13 in Lockridge Arena.
The Mines defense was extra special as they held the Mustangs to only 37 points on 21% shooting – both of which were season bests for CSM. They also posted six blocks and steals in the rout.
After a low scoring first quarter, the Orediggers took it to WNMU in the second period as they outscored the Mustangs a staggering 24-5 to essentially put the game away.
That second quarter run started with a 9-0 with a pair of buckets from freshman Cassidy Budge to stretch a 14-9 lead into a 23-9 advantage. Then a pair of 6-0 runs over the next three minutes of game play pushed the lead to 35-13, and redshirt-freshman Elizabeth Tomon capped the explosive quarter with a three ball with eight seconds in the half.
Mines only grew that lead over the second half as they outscored the Mustangs 16-8 and 21-15 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, but the heavy lifting was done earlier in the game as they cruised to a 75-37 victory.
