GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines (2-4) split a doubleheader with Fort Hays State (6-4) on Saturday, February 20 at Jim Darden Field.

The Orediggers lost a late lead in game one as they fell by the final of 13-8, but they rebounded in game two for a 10-6 victory. FHSU leads the game four-game series 2-1 with one final game to go.

Game One

Mines wasted little time getting on the board in the opener of the doubleheader as Josh Martinez got things started with a one-out double to right centerfield.

After a second out, Connor Lambert smacked a base hit to right field that the FHSU right fielder also muffed. The costly error allowed a run to score and Lambert to move onto third base. Lambert came home shortly after that on a wild pitch to put Mines up 2-0.

In the third inning both teams traded runs with each other, but Fort Hays State took over the lead in the fourth inning with a four-spot that included five hits and an error.

The see-sawing continued though as Mines came back with a four-run bottom of the fourth. Freshman Jace Selsor began the frame with a triple to right center. Kyle Alexander followed him and drove Selsor in on a bloop single to centerfield. After back-to-back outs due to fielder's choices, Josh Martinez drove in Daniel Ciraula from second base.

After a Tigers pitching change, back-to-back walks by Nate Olinger and Lambert scored another run. Mines closed out the inning with its fourth run when Cody Marvel was plunked by FHSU reliever Casey Sedbrook.

The Orediggers went on to add what appeared to be an insurance run in the sixth inning when Kyle Alexander knocked in Cody Marvel to stretch the CSM advantage to 8-5, but it was not to be as the Tigers put up eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the game, 13-8.

Game Two

The Orediggers came out of the gates hot yet again as they put up a two-spot in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Connor Lambert and Cody Marvel hit back-to-back singles into right field to put CSM up 2-0.

While Fort Hays State got one of the runs back on a Connor Ross homerun, Mines went back to work in the bottom of the second.

With one out, Griffin Jones legged out a triple to right centerfield. Griffin then scampered home when Jack Bevan's shot to centerfield was dropped by FHSU. After another Tigers error, Josh Martinez smoked a single through the left side to plate Bevan and put Mines up 4-1.

CSM continued to score as they put two runs once again in both the third and fourth innings. The runs in the second inning came a Drew Burman RBI single and a Bevan sac fly. Then in the fourth a throwing error by FHSU starting pitcher Justin Hersch and another Burman base hit put Mines up 8-2 after four innings of play.

While Fort Hays put up for runs in the top of the fifth, Mines responded in the bottom of the sixth when Griffin Jones hit a two-RBI double to right field to put the game away for a 10-6 victory.
