How It Happened
Colorado School of Mines baseball scored early and often in a 16-1 rout of Fort Hays State on Sunday, February 21 at Jim Darden Field.

Mines (3-4) closed out the four-game series against the Tigers (6-5) with a 17-hit outing that also saw a gem of a performance from starting pitcher A.J. Valerio. Valerio threw six innings of one run ball with two strikeouts and only five hits.

Mines came out firing on all cylinders by putting up two runs in the first inning followed by a huge four-spot in the second frame.

In the first, Connor Lambert knocked a base hit into centerfield to score Josh Martinez from second base. After a second out, a passed ball by FHSU catcher Ty Redington allowed Nate Olinger to touch home.

Then in second inning, Mines loaded the bases on two outs when Olinger drove the first run in when he worked a walk on a 3-1 count. One batter later, Lambert snuck a double down the leftfield line to clear the bases and put the Orediggers up 6-0

Fort Hays State went on to get one run back in the top of the third, but CSM immediately went back to work in the bottom half of the inning and stretched the lead to 8-1. Both runs came off the bat of Logan Smith who plopped a base hit to the feet of the right fielder to score both Jack Bevan and Caleb Thomas.

Mines went on to add another run in the fifth on a RBI groundout from Logan Smith before they exploded for a seven-run sixth inning to end the game in seven innings.

That seven-run frame came on eight hits and was aided by two Tigers errors. Olinger and Bevan both doubled in the frame and Lambert drilled a triple to right centerfield.
