Box Score How It Happened
Colorado School of Mines (7-5) closed out a huge series victory over national power Angelo State (7-6) with a 13-5 victory on Sunday, February 28 at Jim Darden Field.
After dropping the first game of the series (16-1) on Friday night, Mines bounced back with a doubleheader sweep (10-7, 5-2) yesterday and finished it with a today's rout.
Mines picked right up from where they left off yesterday with as the put up a pair of runs in the first inning to put the pressure on ASU.
After two outs, senior Nate Olinger got a rally going with a double down the left field line. Junior Connor Lambert followed with his own double that bounced along the leftfield chalk which plated Olinger. The hit train continued when junior Cody Marvel knocked a pitch back into centerfield to score Lambert and put CSM up 2-0.
Angelo State got one of the runs back in the top of the third inning, but Mines went right back to work in the bottom half of the frame and put up two more runs.
With runners on second and third and no outs, Lambert picked up his second RBI on the day with a sac fly to plate junior Josh Martinez. Then, for the second time in three innings, Marvel followed Lambert another RBI single to put the Orediggers lead at 4-1.
The Rams came right back in the top of the fourth with their own two runs to narrow the CSM advantage to 4-3.
That ended up being as close as Angelo State got in the contest though as Mines exploded with a five-run fifth inning to take a 9-3 advantage. The Orediggers opened the frame with an Olinger double followed by walk for Lambert. After a pitching change for ASU, Marvel lined a single to centerfield to load the bases.
The first run came next when freshman Jace Selsor knocked an RBI single to left center. After an out, sophomore Drew Burman earned walk to score the second run. The third run came on a wild pitch, and the fourth was on a RBI groundout from freshman Daniel Ciraula. Junior Logan Smith capped the big inning with an RBI single to right field.
Mines wasn't done piling on the runs though as they added three more in the sixth and another one in the bottom of the eighth, and even though ASU added a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings it wouldn't be enough.
