Colorado School of Mines battled the RMAC's top team in Colorado Mesa, but fell in a Saturday doubleheader by scores of 7-4 and 9-1.
The Mavericks (22-7, 21-1 RMAC) extended their win streak to 19 games with a walk-off home run in the first game and a nine-run outburst in the five-inning game two. The Orediggers fall to 14-17 overall and 12-12 in league play.
GAME 1 - Colorado Mesa 7, Mines 4
Brooke Hodgson's three-run walk-off home run capped a seven-run comeback as Colorado Mesa overcame Mines 7-4 in the opener.
The Orediggers took a 4-0 lead thanks to a big third inning. Dani Valerio singled in Brielle Asato to start the rally, and Boston Ludlow added a two-out, two-run single to bring in Sonoma Toot and Valerio before Amanda Etcheverry's double scored Ludlow for the 4-0 lead.
Hallie Smith one-hit the Mavs into the fourth, but the home side drew closer with a three-run sixth. Zoe Pakes drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Courtney Robbins' sacrifice fly plated a run before Kelli Mrofcza cut the lead to 4-3 on an RBI single to left field.
In the seventh, Makayla Kovac doubled in Nicole Robinson to tie the game, and Hodgson blasted a three-run shot on the next at-bat to end it.
McKenzie Surface (11-3) struck out five in the win. Smith (10-7) whiffed four and allowed six earned. Valiero (2-for-4) and Toot (2-for-4) each recorded multiple hits.
GAME 2 - Colorado Mesa 9, Mines 1 (5 inn.)
Mesa blasted nine runs on nine hits to win the nightcap 9-1 in five innings.
Rochelle Talamantes one-hit the Orediggers while Mesa scored in all but the first inning to win their 19th in a row.
The home team went ahead 1-0 on Sarah Phillis' ground-out in the second, but Mines pulled even in the top of the third when Valerio's infield single scored Etcheverry. Mesa answered in the bottom half with two runs on RBIs from Hodgson and Pakes, and Robbins' second sac fly of the day made it 4-1.
The Mavericks put together a big fifth innings, keyed by Blake Adams' two-run single, to put them on the verge of the win, and Nicole Robinson's single ended it with the bases loaded.
Talamantes (5-2) allowed one run on one hit and struck out two for the win. Maddie Rogers (4-10) allowed four earned and struck out three.
