Mines Drops Tournament Opener to CSU-Pueblo

5/12/2016 5:38:00 PM

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines wasn't able to slow down a hot-hitting Colorado State-Pueblo club as they fell by the final of 11-6 in the opening game of the 2016 RMAC Baseball Tournament of Thursday, May 12 at Suplizio Field.

Mines (28-14) got off to a great start, but it wasn't meant to be as the ThunderWolves (27-17) hit five homeruns in the contest to pull off the first-round upset in the double-elimination tournament.

The Orediggers wasted little time jumping on CSU-Pueblo starting pitcher Cameron Weinberg as they pushed four across in the top of the first inning. Mines promptly loaded the bases on a walk, a base hit and an error before the ThunderWolves knew what hit them.

Cody Marvel then plated the first run when he hit a hard infield single to the shortstop. After a pair of outs, Jack Bevan then hit a hard chopper to CSU-P third baseman Manny Menocal who then rushed his throw to first base. Menocal's throw was not true and it allowed all three Orediggers on base to touch home.

CSU-Pueblo did answer back though in the bottom half of the frame with solo homeruns from Taylor Snyder and Menocal. The ThunderWolves added another in the second inning on a double by RMAC Player of the Year Jordan Godman.

Pueblo appeared as though they were poised to add more with the bases loaded, but Mines starting pitcher A.J. Valerio struck out All-RMAC First-Team first baseman Dominick Bregar to end the threat.

Mines added a lone run in the top of the fourth on an RBI sac fly from Logan Smith to take a 5-3 lead, but the ThunderWolves responded in the bottom half of the inning with another homerun from Snyder – this time a two-run shot – to tie the game at five apiece.

Pueblo wasn't done scoring though as they finally took the lead an inning later when Oliver Jackson got his own two-run homerun off of CSM reliever Clark Martin. Then, in the seventh inning, Jackson hit another two-run homerun to gives CSU-P a 9-5 lead.

After a disastrous opening inning, Pueblo starting pitcher Cameron Weinberg settled in and made things tough for the Orediggers until he was lifted in the middle the eighth inning.

The ThunderWolves went on to add two more in the bottom of the eighth inning to stretch their lead to 11-5 and put the game out of reach.

While Mines attempted to make a bit of a rally in the ninth inning when Jace Selsor drove in Connor Lambert on a RBI single to right field, it wouldn't be enough as they dropped the tournament opener.

Mines combined for 10 hits on the afternoon with Logan Smith, Connor Lambert and Cody Marvel each supplying two of them. Smith, Marvel and Jace Selsor had the lone RBI on the afternoon.

The Orediggers will now play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. against the loser of the Colorado Mesa and Adams State contest later this evening. Win that contest and they will then play again at 7 p.m; lose and they are eliminated.
