#23 Mesa Stuns #10 Mines, 41-40, In 2OT

GOLDEN, Colo. - #23 Colorado Mesa held off a furious comeback by #10 Colorado School of Mines, winning on a blocked extra point in double-overtime 41-40.

Mesa's Dustin Rivas blocked what would've been the game-tying extra point in double overtime after Justin Dvorak scored on a diving scramble to the pylon.

Dvorak engineered a two-touchdown comeback to send the game to overtime, compiling 485 yards and four touchdowns on 47-of-67 passing. He became Mines' all-time passing yards leader as he crossed 10,000 during the game.

Down 27-13 entering the fourth quarter, Mines used tough defense and big offensive plays to bridge the gap. Ty Young rose up for a superb one-handed touchdown catch to start the rally, and Brody Oliver finished off a drive with his second score of the game to tie it at 27-27.

Mines had two chances to win it after Matthew King's sack stopped CMU with 2:53 left; Dvorak was intercepted by Aviles in Mavs territory to end that threat, and after consecutive sacks by Dean Wenger and Michael Kelso got the ball back with a minute to go, Mines marched down but a missed field goal from 42 ended regulation.

In overtime, Young caught a 19-yard touchdown to start things before David Tann's 14-yarder forced a second extra period. Mesa started off with Virnel Moon's 19-yard catch, and on Mines' turn, Dvorak scrambled out of a 4th-and-12 situation to hit the left pylon and scored. Rivas, however, blocked the extra point to win.

NOTABLES
- Dvorak surpassed former Harlon Hill Trophy winner Chad Friehauf in yardage and now owns all three major Mines records - touchdowns (96), yards (10,193), and completions (822). He is the first Mines player to surpass 10,000 yards in a career.
- Brody Oliver had his third straight 100+ yard game, catching seven passes for 119 yards and two scores, including Mines' only first-half score. Young had a game-high 12 receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns, and Zach Richter compiled 101 yards on 11 snags.
- Zac Guy added a rushing touchdown for Mines to open their second-half scoring.
- The Mines defense recorded eight sacks, hitting starter Sean Rubalcaba seven times and backup Eystin Salum once. Rubalcaba left the game for two series in the third quarter before returning.
- King had a tremendous game with 3.5 sacks. Drake Thenell led all players with 12 tackles.
- Averie Mansfield, in his first career start, had five tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble recovered by Michael Kelso, who himself had a sack among six tackles.
- Ryan Sheehan hit field goals from 22 and 41 yards to start Mesa's scoring.
- Tann ended up with two touchdowns for Mesa. Josh Brown caught two as well for 126 yards. Rubalcaba was 18-for-28 for 241 yards and three touchdowns.
- It was Mines' first overtime game since 2011, when they beat Western New Mexico 27-21.
- Mesa retain the Nyikos Cup, given to the winner of the yearly game between Mines and Mesa. The cup is named for the late Dr. Michael Nyikos, an administrator who served at both institutions and was Chairman of the Mines Board of Trustees.
