GOLDEN, Colo. -
Emily Garnier's first-half penalty kick was the only score #23 Colorado School of Mines needed to get past West Texas A&M, 1-0, on Saturday.
The Orediggers (2-0) recorded their second straight shutout in a game that was delayed for 48 minutes by lightning midway through the first half.
The Lady Buffs' (0-2) best chance came in the sixth minute when Marlene van Mourik forced a superb point-blank reaction save from
Sam Zumbro.
Jennifer Kendall nearly scored for Mines the same way a minute later, but goalkeeper Courtney Dippel was equal to it.
After the delay came with 12:27 remaining in the first half,
Haley Cole was taken down on a run in the box, and Garnier stepped up and rifled home the PK to go up 1-0.
The second half was largely uneventful as both midfields battled for possession, with
Cari Smith's speculative long-range curler tipped over the bar by Dippel at 77' being the best chance of the half.
