PREVIEW: #18 Mines Takes on the Colorado Premier Challenge

After sweeping through the Oredigger Classic, the competition ratchets up a few notches at the Colorado Premier Challenge for #18 Mines.

COLORADO PREMIER CHALLENGE
The Orediggers kick off the second week of the season with a challenging slate at the 2016 Colorado Premier Challenge this Friday and Saturday at MSU Denver and Regis. Mines will take on #5 Southwest Minnesota State and West Florida (receiving votes) on the opening day of the tournament – both games at MSU Denver. The results of day one will determine opponents, sites, and game times for day two. More information HERE.

IN THE POLLS
A perfect 4-0 weekend allowed Mines to move up from #25 to #18 in the week one AVCA Coaches' Poll. The Orediggers put up sweeps against St. Cloud State, Dallas Baptist and Edinboro before pulling out a tough five-set thriller against Cal State L.A. at this past weekend's Oredigger Classic. 

ALANNA = AWESOME
Speaking of the Oredigger Classic, senior right side hitter Alanna Winfield was a huge reason that Mines went 4-0 this past weekend. The Houston native drilled 65 total kills for a 4.64 k/s average while producing at a .419 clip. She turned in matches of 23, 19, and 15 kills en route to her earning MVP of the tournament and RMAC Offensive Player of the Week for week one.

IN THE RMAC STATS
After the opening weekend of the season, Mines finds itself near the top of most RMAC statistical categories. The Orediggers are the top team in assists per set (13.43), are second in hitting percentage (.280) and kills per set (14.21) and are fourth in the league in service aces per set (1.64). 

LOOKING AHEAD
Mines will return home September 16-17 for the opening RMAC weekend against New Mexico Highlands and CSU-Pueblo.
