GOLDEN, Colo. - Murphy Gershman's double-double and
Gokul Natesan's 24 points helped #22 Colorado School of Mines come back to beat Adams State, 75-66, and run their win streak to 11 in a row.
The Orediggers (17-3, 12-2 RMAC) will end the month of January without a loss as they used a late 15-2 run to erase a four-point Adams State lead with less than five minutes to go. It was a match-up of the RMAC's two hottest teams as the Grizzlies (10-11, 7-8 RMAC) had their five-game win streak snapped.
Gershman had a superb effort with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Natesan poured in 24 points and
Ben Clare added 11 with nine boards. The win came despite a season-worst 21 turnovers for the Orediggers, but they made up for it at the foul line going 22-for-27 to ASU's 12-21.
Mines led most of the first half but went into the break tied after
Adam Laine and Brandon Sly traded buckets to end the period 31-31. ASU immediately took control coming out of the locker room with an 8-0 run, but seven straight points by Natesan gave Mines the lead back temporarily.
The two sides traded the lead over the next several minutes before a 5-0 ASU spurt put them up 56-52 with 8:07 to go. A
Kaan Korkmaz layup sparked Mines' big run as the Grizzlies were held without a field goal for a 7:19 span. Mines also feasted on poor ASU foul shooting down the stretch as they went 3-9 in the final 7:45, while separate 8-0 and 7-0 Mines runs put the game out of reach. Clare's and-one with 1:18 remaining to go up six was the key play in the run, with Natesan's breakaway layup the dagger at 1:09.
