Mines Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee launched a new reading program on Monday, October 16 in partnership with Mitchell Elementary (4th grade) and Maple Grove Elementary (6th grade).

All Mines Athletics teams will be involved in this new reading outreach endeavor, taking place once per month and led by Sarah Berude (swimming), LaRose Currie (volleyball) and Liz Tomon (women's basketball).  Each Mines Athletics team will visit each school for one hour on a designated date, allowing all athletes the opportunity to work with and mentor community youth in a group-learning and team-building environment.  Visits consist of 30 minutes of reading (sport and team-related books with inspiring/motivational themes) and 30 minutes of physical activities.  Mines teams meet with two classes at each school, totaling 50 students per school per monthly visit.

The first program date, Monday, October 16, was a great success and featured members of the Men's and Women's Swimming teams.  The outing was coordinated by SAAC leader Sarah Berude who was joined at Mitchell Elementary by teammates Susan Fender, Noah Gomes, Yara Lima, Seamus Millet, Sasha Moreland, Olivia Morley, Ben Topper, Jordan Umrysh, Gillian Wagner, Abby Wong and Mia Wood.  Team members at Maple Grove Elementary included Carissa Anderson, Lilly Creswick, Kori Davis, Cort Hanson, Loki Hondorf, Ian Kingsolver, Thomas McWhirter, Madeleine Oakley, Caleb Ring, Daphne Williams and April Wood.
