GOLDEN, Colo. - #19 Colorado School of Mines rallied back to take a five-set thriller from MSU Denver, 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11) on Friday night to stay unbeaten in RMAC action.
The Orediggers (17-3, 11-0 RMAC) remained alone in first place, snapping the Roadrunners' (18-4, 10-2 RMAC) 10-match win streak in the process.
Lindsey Jin matched her career high with 18 kills, while
Abby Tiesman and
Janice Jin had 12 each.
Marina Hansen put up 55 assists, and
LaRose Currie added 20 digs to lead the defense. Taylor Duryea paced MSU Denver with 22 kills.
Receiving woes cost Mines in the first set, with four Roadrunner aces letting them get up early on the way to a 25-18 win as Stephanie Laraway had six kills and Metro hit .409. Mines bounced back leading the whole way in the second, however, staying ahead to win 25-23 behind five
Madeline Behr kills and 17 assists from Hansen as Mines hit .382.
Things were tight again in the third, but MSU Denver made the adjustment out of a timeout at 21-21 to end the set on a 4-1 run. That left Mines no margin for error, and they responded with a 25-23 fourth-set win behind six total blocks - including three each by Tiesman and
Ellie Monarch - along with three aces to force a fifth.
Mines raced out to a 6-2 lead in the final set and was up 8-3 at the turn, but three straight Roadrunner points tightened it to 8-6 before back-to-back
Janice Jin kills put some room into the set. MSU Denver refused to quit, getting it back to two points at 13-11, but Mines forced a Santaisha Sturges error to get to match point then ended on a Tiesman and Monarch block.
