CHAMPS! #11 Mines Clinches RMAC Title

GOLDEN, Colo. - #11 Colorado School of Mines claimed the RMAC regular-season championship, using late goals by Nikolaus Grotz and John Haist to beat CSU-Pueblo 3-1.

On a snow-covered pitch with light snow falling throughout the game, the Orediggers (14-3-0, 12-1-0 RMAC) sealed up their sixth RMAC title with tenacious second-half play after the Thunderwolves (3-10-4, 3-6-4 RMAC) erased an early deficit.

Mines will now get a bye in the RMAC Tournment before hosting the semifinals and final, with the semis on Friday, Nov. 3 and the final on Sunday, Nov. 5. Mines will play an opponent to be determined in the first semifinal on Nov. 3 at 5 p.m.

On senior night, Preston Migaki got things off to a flying start in the 10 minute when he settled a loose ball and finished to the near post, but Pueblo's Brayden Ballman scored seven minutes later off Connor Marth's free kick to level the game 1-1.

It would stay that way until the 63rd minute, when a foul outside the left corner of the box set up a scoring opportunity for Mines. Grotz curled the free kick over the wall and into the net to put the Orediggers ahead, and Haist slammed the door with his 18th of the season in the 85th minute, finishing off a 70-yard run with a far-post shot to make it 3-1.

The Orediggers combined both senior goalkeepers with Collin Hall making three saves and sub Josh Clark earning the win. Erich Frey had five saves for CSU-Pueblo, and the Thunderwolves' backline also cleared two more shots off the line.

Mines outshot CSU-Pueblo 19-11 and led 10-6 on corners.

Mines has won six RMAC regular-season titles, including three this decade. The Orediggers last clinched the trophy in 2015, and went on to win the RMAC Tournament that season while advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight.

The Orediggers wrap up the regular season Saturday, hosting UCCS at 1:30 p.m.
