SAN DIEGO - Colorado School of Mines erased a 2-0 deficit in the second half, but a late own goal handed UCCS a 3-2 win in the NCAA South Central championship game at UC San Diego.
The Orediggers (17-4-1) trailed 2-0 at halftime before goals by
Brooke Stoermer and
Nicole LaTourette in the opening 15:40 of the second half tied it up. Mines outshot the Mountain Lions (17-4) by a 19-9 margin in the game. UCCS advances to the super-regional final to play UC San Diego, who beat Western Washington 2-0 in the West final.
Chanisse Hendrix put UCCS ahead in the fifth minute, heading home a cross for an early lead, and Ella Fischer bookended the half with a 42nd-minute goal as the Mountain Lions led 7-5 on shots in the opening period.
Mines attacked out of the break and found life with Stoermer's goal 1:47 in the half as she put a left-footed finish on
Jennifer Kendall's pass. LaTourette then leveled in the 56th minute from
Emily Garnier's cross.
UCCS then went back ahead in the 79th minute when Madison Tominello sent a cross into the box, and an unlucky deflection by a defender put it in for an own goal. Mines desperately looked to equalize in the closing minute with four shots and two corners, but the UCCS defense repelled each attempt.
Garnier's assist of Mines' second goal broke the Mines single-season assists record with 15. The all-American center back ends her career with 29 assists, which ranks second all-time.
